I was in hs, 9th grade when the Broken Movie was getting passed around on VHS copies. I think it had already been around for a bit because The Downward Spiral was getting released, along with the nifty "Broken EP" cardboard package that came with that weird 3" CD that would only work in a tray-style players. This is just information. But at the time it was a big deal. This was early proto-internet days, so rumors ran wild, everyone knew the guy who "actually got killed" blablabla it was exactly what you're imagining right now, except without any adults knowing wtf was going on, I am guessing a lot of dumb 911 calls were made. That would be a sexy B-side, 'police calls made because of Broken Movie in 1993' to the beat of "Dig It" by Skinny Puppy. It lacks broad appeal, I know.

This is one of the most thrilling, unlikely sagas in music history and it was pretty awesome seeing it happen live. I don't think the world is ready for another Trent Reznor to happen. He was way too real & driven to bypass today's safety norms. It was at a time when you could do this, be a positive force, and express these things without a group of psychopaths going viral with a manifesto & committing real-world violence. It was rock at it's most hardcore, sinister level when that was still a good thing. And the man has a real gift for sound production, when almost everything else landed sparkly & without bass, his gear was rolling heavy, driving the mad power of these songs way farther south than anything had done before. Not just the records, but the live shows- I think Trent Reznor must have doubled-up on the 18" bass wall, because I'll never forget the first time it felt like I had really been injured by a sound system. And it was a 1994 NIN show on the breaking Downward Spiral tour. Ever been to a show where the bass is so powerful it lifts your feet off the floor like an air hockey table- It was goddamn spectacular at a stadium-level, and the volume was meant to be unsafe

I guess I was born with a massive amount of creativity because "art" is for people with no imagination. Photography for example. Every picture I take has artistic appeal.
